Baking a Rainbow Cake

Last week my little niece celebrated her first birthday and that screamed for a special cake. Since I baked Martin’s birthday cake last year and another one for his dad I’m kinda addicted to bigger, better and more creative cakes. It’s so much fun and sooooo relaxing.

Looking for an inspiration I stumbled over Martha’s site and found a recipe for a rainbow cake and loved it instantly. Though I never managed to bake biscuit cake I thought I’d give it a try.

Actually I followed Martha’s recipe. Pretty easy.

ingredients

You mingle everything together until you have a big bowl of dough.

dough

Divide into 6 equal parts and add food colors. On Martha’s site they used a kind of gel. It is available here in Germany but you have to order it so I used normal food colors from the supermarket and hoped it would lead to the same result. It didn’t. The colors turned out very light but actually I really liked the pastel result. I had red, orange, yellow, green, blue and purple (mixed with red and blue).

6 colors

Since I only have ONE pan I had to bake them separately which took quite a while.

6 bisquits

Before stacking the biscuits I prepared the cream cheese frosting. 4 packs of cream cheese, a part of confectioner’s sugar, butter and some vanilla. Beat until smooth.

I began with the purple biscuit, poured some of the frosting and covered it with blue and so on and so on until it looked like this.

stapled

Covered with the rest of the frosting it looked like this. Very innocent!

covered

Yes and this is one slice that I managed to photograph. It tasted great and the cake was finished within minutes.

That was fun and easy to bake. Maybe I should get at least one more pan for such occasions. This won’t be the last time I baked this fantastic cake.

Get the Pointe

Ballet dancer on pointe

From age 5 to 16 I used to dance ballet. Twice a week. At some point school and education (unfortunately) became more important than dancing and my knees hurt like crazy so I quit. But I miss it and wish I was able to go back in class and dance, dance, dance.
Dancing was always one of my passions. I still benefit from my classical ballet education – my muscles are still strong and I have good body tension. What amazes me now that I’m almost 30 years old is that I loved classical music so much as a teenager. I still do but back in the days I was a huge fan of Guns’n'Roses. Imagine that! And twice a week I’d listen to Tchaikovsky and danced like a madwoman.

Ballet is the most beautiful way to move to music. So delicate, elegant and soft and yet your body has to master peak performances. The grace of a ballet dancer is such eye candy. Modern ballet is beautiful, too. Watch this video!

If I could I’d still be taking classes.  Sometimes it’s hard not being able to dance and my broken ankle will never be as flexible again. Bummer.

What are your passions?

Quote of the week

 obey 1280

This was one busy week. Still super hot and a desk full of stuff to do in the office. I can’t believe I’m sitting at home now finally.

Unfortunately I couldn’t blog about the sweet little dress that I sewed for my tiny little niece that will have her first birthday tomorrow but I promise I will as soon as I can. I hope you enjoyed my guest post over at Covet . Part one was on Tuesday and part two on Thursday. Totally missed to blog and redirect you to it. I’m happy to help out Brigitte who is enjoying her stay in Peru. Hope she is having an amazing time.

I found this quote on Twitter this week and liked it a lot. That is so my way :-) Though I worry about the grammar. Is it right?! I copied it exactly as it was but really…shouldn’t it be “disciplined”? Can anyone tell me?

I’m beat people and will rest for the weekend. Have a good one, too and enjoy your free time!

Xo, Lou

Update: I had to correct that spelling mistake… Couldn’t live with it!!

YAY. Today is my turn to present you my outcome of my Alphabet Walk. Just in case you don’t know what it is… Piper from One Sydney Road invented this little game: Take pictures of things that represent the letters of the alphabet. I did something similar once already some weeks ago though itwas a Number Walk… maybe you remember.  Now in this fun blog hop I picked the letter L .
